A Seussical Celebration

Author: palmettoprep  //  Category: Uncategorized

In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we had a little celebration today.

We made our own “Cat in the Hat” hats!

We visited Seussville (www.seussville.com) to learn more about Dr. Seuss and to play a few games.

We had a Dr. Seuss book reading marathon. Each student selected a few books they wanted to read and completed a story map for each, describing the characters, setting, and theme.

We even had the opportunity to write a Seuss-inspired story!

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells.” Dr. Seuss

Can you believe that it’s almost March? This school year is flying by and we’re already thinking about next school year! Please remember to enroll your child for the coming school year. Students will have the opportunity to visit their classroom for next year in the next few weeks. They will get a sneak peek at what it’s like to be a 4th grader in Mrs. Selfs’ room!

Here are a few of our poems!

Roses are red

Violets are blue

I like Valentine’s Day

Do you like it too?

Bettina

Roses are Red

Violets are Blue

It is true that I love Valentines too!

Ashley

Roses are Red

Violetes are Blue

I like books, how about you?

Robbie

Roses are Red

Violets are Blue

Oh, you might know that too.

Matthew

Roses are Red

The ocean is Blue

Why do you look like a cup of stew?

Logan

Astronomy, Astronomy

Author: palmettoprep  //  Category: Uncategorized

As we study about Astronomy, we’ve been practicing this song by Eve Lewis to help us learn about Astronomy. It is set to the tune of “Oh Tannebaum”.

Astronomy, astronomy!
You organize the sky for me.
The countless stars so far away
Up close burn like our sun in day.
Though distance makes them seem so small,
Close up we’d find them giants all.
Oh, telescopes help us gaze far,
Beyond Earth, planets, and our star.

Astronomy, astronomy!
You organize the sky for me.
You help me grasp with gratitude
Just how vast the magnitude.
And now and then I marvel when
A shooting star comes streaking in,
And the power of the heavenly
interrupts infinity!

Area, Area, It’s Easy As Pie

All you do is multiply! :) Today, we used the Smart Board and virtual Cheez-Its to learn how to find the area of a rectangle. It was great visualizing the area. However, the Cheez-Its really made us hungry!

Earth’s Greatest Storms

Author: palmettoprep  //  Category: Uncategorized

We ventured over to Roper Mountain Science Center today for a presentation on “Earth’s Greatest Storms”. Our friends loved hearing about thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. We even learned stories about a few constellations. Here are a few snapshots of our fun morning. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take pictures during the presentation.

Fun Test?

Author: palmettoprep  //  Category: Uncategorized

Can you believe that some of the 3rd grade students have asked me to do this particular test EVERY DAY? They had so much fun with it! Here are the questions from the test! The students had to participate even if they felt a little silly.

1. Read the following numbers 4, 9, 11, 15, 12 to yourself. Remember these numbers.

2. Write the sum of 12 and 5.

3. Write the name of your favorite book.

4. Sing a line of your favorite song.

5. Stand up and read the following words out loud, “My teacher is the best teacher in the school.” (this is not true, by the way:))

6. Without looking, write the numbers down from number one.

7. Stand up and do 10 jumping jacks.

8. Sit down.

9. Think about what these activities have in common. Write down your guess.

10. Put your head down and rest for a moment.

*Can you guess what all of these items have in common? They all require action from our nervous system! Students were introduced to the Nervous System by doing this activity. We have enjoyed studying the parts of the Nervous System and the brain this week.

Learning is Fun!

Today in math, we worked in stations to practice our skills! One station was Multiplication Roll’ Em. At this station, students took turns rolling dice to see what numbers they would get. The student would then multiply their numbers together and the student with the highest product was the winner of the round. Another station was “Behind the Wheel” in which students competed to make it around the track first by knowing their multiplication facts. Students really enjoy having a variety of learning activities! They had so much fun they forgot they were learning! :)
